Everest Region is one of the most famous and popular trekking regions in Nepal. Everest (Khumbu) region is considered to be the ‘KING’ of all trekking regions which is located in the north-east of Nepal and offers the great opportunity to have unique experience. It is popularly known by its three names. The official Nepali name “Sagarmatha”(meaning a forehead reaching the sky) was given by the Nepalese government. The Tibetan name, Chomolongma (mother goddess) and the English name Mt. Everest was named after Sir George Everest, British Surveyor, and the first person to record its height. The first successful ascent of it was made by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on 29 may 1953 but it was declared as the highest mountain in Mar 1856. It has been the greatest attraction as a source of inspiration and life time destination to many adventurers, mountaineers, explorers, nature lovers and trekkers. Everest region is protected by the Sagarmatha National Park, established in 1976 with an area of 1148 square km. This is one of the few places on earth with the rarest bio-diversity and the highest and youngest mountain system in the world so that it was listed in UNESCO’s world natural heritage sites in 1979. Everest region is not only the home of magnificent peaks, glaciers, icefalls, lakes but also the home of world natural heritage sites, Sagarmatha National Park, century old Buddhist monasteries, indigenous Sherpa people and their culture. This region is also a habitat for different floras and fauna like pheasants, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear musk deer and Himalayan wolves.
