It is formally restricted area of eastern part of Nepal and protected by the Makalu Barun National Park, which was established in 1992 with an area of 2,330 sq km. The altitude of Makalu region ranges from 850m to above 5000m offering impressive natural scenery with climatic condition ranging from tropical to sub-alpine. Having a wide range of altitudinal and climatic variations, the Makalu Barun area offers a remarkable and diverse habitat for a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Mt. Makalu, the fifth highest mountain of the world (8,463m) stands in this region, is the highlight and tougher one to climb. It is considered one of the difficult climbs in the world.
