Rara Lake Trek is one of the best trekking packages to explore the natural beauty of Rara lake and Rara national park. Rara Lake is a major attraction of this region, mostly visited by nature lovers for a pleasant time of their own. It is the biggest and deepest fresh water lake walled by green hills in the Nepal himalayas. It is a shimmering blue jewel set in a ring of snowy peaks. It is the heaven on the earth. It is the main feature of the Rara national park, located at an altitude of 2,990m above sea level and 167m deep in the far north western part of Nepal. Boating in the clear waters, hiking to nearby hills for closer views of the mountains and lake, meeting the charming local people, or just taking a walk around the lake watching out for a wild flower or a rare bird on the way lures the tourists from the entire globe.
Rara national park is located in the mid-western region of Nepal, north-west of Kathmandu, capital city of Nepal, in the isolated region of the Karnali district. The national park protects many endandered species of flora and fauna. Some of the wild and rare species found in the park are the red panda, himalayan black bear, himalayan tahr, wild dog, wild boar, gaur, serow, musk deer, yellow-throated martin and many varieties of birds like monal, kalij, and doves. The region is covered with green forests and lush valleys and alpine fields. The Rara Lake Trek encounters with various indigenuous people with different culture, tradition and lifestyle.
Hence, Rara Lake Trek has become more popular amongst domestic as well as international tourists due to its unique natural beauty. It is compared to heaven on the earth, also called the natural paradise.
Rara Lake Trek starts from Kathmandu visiting UNESCO world cultural heritage sites which includes Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath and Swoyambhunath for the experience of beautiful fusion of glorious history, culture and religion. Then reaches Rara Lake, an ultimate destination leading through remote country side and then ends back to Kathmandu. A journey into the Jumla region and the beautiful Rara Lake, is probably one of the most rewarding and fascinating treks in all the Himalayan range given its un-spoilt splendor of nature.
Day 01 : Arrival in Kathmandu
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, meet and greet at the international airport and transfer to hotel. Short briefing of trip. Check in to hotel and rest for refreshment. Overnight at hotel, Kathmandu.
Day 02 : Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour and Trek Preparation – B
After breakfast, pick up from hotel and proceed to Kathmandu sightseeing tour especially UNESCO world cultural heritage sites which includes Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swoyambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square and Patan Durbar Square for the experience of beautiful fusion of religion, culture and history. These heritage monuments reflect the centuries old arts, architecture and culture of Nepal which are medieval charm of Malla Dynasty. After tour, drop off to hotel and make a preparation for Rara Lake trek, including all permits and trekking equipment. Overnight at hotel, Kathmandu.
Day 03 : Fly from Kathmandu – Nepalgunj (150m, 40 min) – B/L/D
After short excursion in Kathmandu, transfer to domestic airport terminal for the flight to Nepalgunj, located in Western Nepal. Nepalgunj, a town near the Nepal-India border, is also the gateway to Simikot, Humla. The town itself is an interesting Terai town that showcases the diverse culture of Nepal. In Nepalgunj, visit the local market, mini-zoo and nearby villages. Overnight at hotel, Nepalgunj.
Day 04 : Fly from Nepalgunj – Jumla (2,540m, 20 min) – B/L/D
After early breakfast, transfer to Nepalgunj airport for the flight to the hilly landscape of Jumla, one of the least accessible districts in Nepal. Situated in the foothills of the Sisne Himalaya, Jumla is also the gateway for trekkers who want to explore the remote Karnali region of Nepal. Overnight at Tea house, Jumla.
Day 05 : Jumla – Trek to Chere Chaur (3055m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the first day of the trek to Chere Chaur.The trek ascends to Chere Chaur along the Jugad Khola. On the way, the trek passes through Khalanga Bazzar, a small market place for the nearby villages and then it also passes a couple of villages and a temple before reaching today’s destination. Overnight at Tea house, Chere Chaur.
Day 06 : Chere Chaur – Trek to Chala chaur (2980m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Chala chaur. From Chere Chaur, the trek heads towards the western trail and ascends slowly until the Jaljala pass (3580m). Then, it crosses the pass and continues on a relatively straight trail until reaching Jaljala Chaur. From here, it ascends on a steep trail and enter the Rara Lake Circuit before reaching Chala chaur. Overnight at Tea house. Chala chaur.
Day 07 : Chala chaur – Trek to Sinja Valley (2490m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Sinja Valley. It is an uphill climb to Sinja Valley. On the way, it passes through several villages and goes along the Jaljala Khola (stream). Sinja Valley holds an important place in the history of Nepal. The valley houses the ancient capital city of the Khasa Kingdom that ruled this area from the 12th to the 14th century. Palaces, temples, and the ancient remains of a settlement were uncovered during excavations spearheaded by the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge University. Overnight at Tea house, Sinja Valley.
Day 08 : Trek to to Ghorosingha (3050m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Ghorosingha. The trek goes on an uphill trail alongside Hima River. From the village we climb on a steep trail for a while followed by a relatively easy trail until Laha Village. From Laha, it is a steep climb up until Ghorosingha alongside Ghatte khola (stream). Overnight in Ghorosingha.
Day 09 : Ghorosingha – Trek to to Rara Lake (3010m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Rara Lake. The trek goes on a steep ascent trail. The trail is alongside Chuchhemara Danda from where it offers an admirable Himalayan panorama, the vast and tranquil Rara Lake, and the lush vegetation of the Rara National Park. On the way to Rara Lake, the trek passes through Khatyar Khola Camp and a few villages including Murma. From Murma, the ascent gets a little easier. The trek continues towards Chapri village which houses the Rara National Park Head Quarter. Overnight at hotel, Rara Lake.
Day 10 : Explore Rara Lake – B/L/D
Rara Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Nepal. After breakfast, investigate the azure waters of the massive lake also referred to as Mahendra Taal (lake) after late king Mahendra. While boating, get to admire the picturesque setting of the lake and discover quite a few varieties of fish. Chuchemara Peak lies on the southern side of the Rara Lake whereas Ruma Kand and Malika Kand peaks frame its northern area. Overnight at hotel, Rara Lake.
Day 11 : Rara Lake – Trek to Pina (2440m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Pina. From Rara Lake the trek is easy and goes on a relatively straight trail until Gamgadhi which is the headquarters of the remote Mugu District of Nepal. From Gamgadhi, it descends down to Pina Village following a steep trail. Overnight at Tea house, Pina.
Day 12 : Pina – Trek to Bumra (2850m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Bumra. From Pina the trek descends and crosses the Ghurchi Lagna pass at 3480 m. Then, it continues to descend and passes through a few villages before reaching Bumra. The Bumra village is also known as Nauri Ghat. Overnight at Tea house, Bumra.
Day 13 : Bumra – Trek to Jumla (2540m) – B/L/D
After breakfast, start the trek to Jumla. The trek crosses two suspension bridges over Hima River and descends downhill. After trekking for a few hours, it gets to natural hot spring water. Take a dip into it which eases aching body. Not long after the hot spring, it crosses Danphe Lagna pass at 3691 m. After reaching Cherechaur, it follows back to the same trail and reaches Jumla. Overnight at Tea house, Jumla.
Day 14 : Fly Jumla – back to Nepalgunj and then Kathmandu – B/L/D
After breakfast, take the earliest flight available to Nepalgunj from Jumla. After reaching Nepalgunj, fly yet again to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. After reaching Kathmandu, transfer to hotel. Check in to hotel and rest for refreshment. In the evening, Farewell dinner in a typical Nepali restaurant with authentic nepali cuisine and cultural dance show to celebrate the successful completion of the Rara Lake trek. Overnight at hotel, Kathmandu.
Day 15 : Leisure Day – B
This is a rest day. So, enjoy the free time by shopping at souvenirs shops or hanging around Thamel (Tourism hub city). Overnight at hotel, Kathmandu.
Day 16 : Departure – B
Leisure until departure. Transfer to International airport terminal to board the flight.
Important Note:
Your safety is of paramount concern while traveling with us. Please note that your Trekking leader has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the itinerary if it seems necessary due to safety concerns. Every effort will be made to maintain the above itinerary. However, traveling in remote mountainous regions can’t be taken guarantee that we will not deviate from it. Weather conditions, health condition of a group member, unexpected natural disasters can all affect to changes in the itinerary. The leader will try to ensure that the trip runs according to plan, but please be prepared to be flexible if required.
